Gertrude M. Barry

Gertrude was born in Wilmington, DE, on March 24, 1923, to the late Patrick Aloysius Mulrooney and Gertrude (Ackerman) Mulrooney. She attended Saint Mary's Grade School and graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1941. She started her career with Diamond State Telephone Company and later in life returned to work retiring from Bell Atlantic in 1985. Gertrude married Joseph R. Barry, Sr., in 1947, and together they loved and raised their three children. She also cherished special times with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A kind, gentle, and caring woman, Gertrude was happiest spending time with her family and friends. Gertrude was a devout Roman Catholic, and her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She loved traveling, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and telling stories about her wonderful childhood.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Barry, Sr., (1997) and her daughter, Patricia A. Kauffman (2007). She was also predeceased by her sister Anne M. Williams (1963) and her brother Joseph P. Mulrooney (2001).
She is survived by those who loved her so dearly, her son, Joseph R. Barry, Jr., and her daughter, Kathleen M. Wismer and her husband, Carl; her 6 grandchildren, Erin B. Henderson, Joseph R. Barry III, Robert D. Bried, Jr., Meghan C. Barry, Kelly A. Smith, and Brian P. Wismer; her 7 great-grandchildren; and her many nieces and nephews.
The family of Gertrude M. Barry would like to thank the staff of Kentmere Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center for their gentle and compassionate care of her.
Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, April 23, 2015, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home, 1400 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, April 24, 2015, at 12:00 pm at Corpus Christi Church, 901 New Road, Wilmington, DE. Burial will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to Corpus Christi Church, 901 New Road, Wilmington, DE 19805.
