Born in Leipzig, Germany where he learned the shoemaker's trade. He came to the United States in 1830, then to Milwaukee where he opened a shoe store. He dealt in real estate, and was elected a justice of the peace. It was said he was the first German-born man to be elected to an office in Wisconsin. In 1844 he was involved in the Banner, Milwaukee's first Geman newspaper. He opened a theater, bringing performers from Cincinnatti. In 1851 he had a wine and liquour store on East Water Street south of the Kirby House. He is credited with introducing the first "Thomas Cat" in the Cream City. He moved to Waukegan where he died at the age of ninety-seven.He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was one of the original purchasers of Forest Home Cemetery.
