Lester Vernon Smith, 96, married, son of George A. Smith and Mary L. Hully, was born February 5, 1891 in Grant, Iowa. He died June 9, 1987 in the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa of cardiac arrest, Kevin Quinn, M.D., burial June 11, 1987 in Grant Cemetery, Sellergren Lindell Funeral Home, Red Oak, Iowa.

Services for Lester V. Smith, 96, Red Oak, formerly of Grant, were Thursday afternoon at the Grant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Grant Cemetery with Sellergren Lindell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
He died Tuesday, June 9, 1987, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital following a five year illness.
Mr. Smith was born February 5, 1891 in Case County, Iowa to George A. Smith and Mary L. Hully. He married Helen Embree in Red Oak, Iowa on September 9, 1916 and had farmed most of his life in the Grant community.
He had moved to Red Oak Good Samaritan Center in 1982. Mr. Smith and his wife were featured in the Red Oak Express this February as being the longest married couple in Montgomery County.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Grant and Griswold for 75 years and was also a member of the Woodman of the World.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Lola Ogden of Stanton; four grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; sister, Grace VanSchuler of Atlantic.
