Albert Bergerhofer Jr. joined the US Army on September 16 1942 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Tail gunner on B-17 #44-6363 on a bombing mission to Vienna, Austria. Albert was wounded by flak on the bomb run. The pilot elected to crash land because it was concluded that Albert could not possibly survive a bail out. Albert survived the crash landing but was taken prisoner by Hungarian soldiers. He died later while receiving medical attention.
