Missoula -- Sophie Schmidt passed away on Feb. 16, 2005 at Hillside Manor in Missoula.

She was born April 5, 1914 in Hays, Kan., to Peter Heili and Mary Hammerschmidt. She grew up in Two Rivers, Wis.

She married Leo Schmidt on July 26, 1932, at St. Catharine's Church in Catharine, Kan.

They lived in Hays, where she gave birth to four children. They lived there until 1954, when they moved the family to Colorado. They remained in Colorado until Leo's retirement, when they returned to Hays. In 1985, they moved to Missoula. While living in Colorado, she had the most beautiful flower gardens, which she meticulously kept weed-free and blooming all summer long.

Sophie was an excellent cook and baker. She was famous for her angel food cakes that she is now baking for the angels! She would cook the family favorite foods all of the time, even though she did not like to eat them herself.

While in Denver, she learned how to bowl. Even though she was nearly 50 years old when she started to bowl in organized leagues, she soon became one of the best around. She won hundreds of local and state awards, even after her 70th birthday. At age 69, she bowled a 696 series, something she was always proud to talk about.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Herb Heili and Bill Heili, sisters Ann Brungardt and Cecilia Newberg and grandson Mark Mercer.

Sophie is survived by her husband of 72 1/2 years, Leo Schmidt of Missoula; brother Ben Heili of Manitowac, Wis.; son Herbert Schmidt and his wife Rosemary of Lenexa, Kan.; daughter Shirley Mercer and her husband Glen of Fort Worth, Texas; son Richard Schmidt
and his wife Ora of Houston; and son Tom Schmidt and his wife Dian of Missoula. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for a later date in Catharine, Kan.
