POMINGALARNA FATALITY.
CARTER KILLED.
A telephone message was received at the Wagga police station at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon that a young man named Basil Berrigan, employed at Pomingalarna Station, by Mr. Lanco Copland, had met with an accident, through the overturning of a cart. Sergt. Gallaher, accompanied by Dr. Burgess, Government medical officer, lost no time in proceeding to the scene in the latter's motor car, reaching the spot, about eight miles out, at 5 o 'clock. They found the Curt had been removed and the lifeless body of Berrigan was lying about 22 feet from the centre of a gateway some 350 yards from the main road and near a lagoon. Four bags, each containing about 56 lbs. of salt were lying beside the corpse. It was ascertained that de ceased, who was about 26 years of age, had been conveying these salt bags in a spring cart from the lucerne paddock to the sheep troughs, about half a mile away. It was quite apparent how the accident had occurred. In going through the gateway the nave of the near wheel struck the gate post with such force that the vehicle was overturned, pinning the unfortunate young man by the neck to the ground. The right side of the skull had been smashed in and death must have been instantaneous. No one witnessed the accident, which must have occurred hours before the body was found. The body was discovered by Mr. Robert Hale, rabbit inspector, and soon afterwards Mr. Lance Copland came up, having gone in search of deceased because of his failure to turn up at dinner time. Dr. Burgess formally pronounced life to be extinct. The matter has been reported to the District Coroner, and an inquest will be held. The deceased's parents live in Best street, Wagga, and in addition he leaves two sisters and two brothers. One of the brothers, Norman, recently returned from the front after two years' service in the Engineer Corps. The deceased was a native of Albury and had been living in Wagga for about five years. The funeral is timed to leave his parents' residence at 3 p.m.. to-day.
