Thomas was engaged in harvesting wool in Laredo, when in 1866, he along with three others, including his partner were killed by Indians. Harriett, another widow of the raid and the daughter of her husband's partner buried the bodies themselves. Harriett returned to Loami Township, where she married Thomas Baker, Jr. on March 19, 1867.
They were the parents of Joseph Franklin Baker, Harriett "Hattie" (Baker) Staley (1870-1932), and Fred Austin Baker (1874-1942).
