Helen Anna (Barloon) Sbiral Wenthold was born on September 11, 1920, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Riha) Barloon in Little Turkey, IA. Helen attended school near Little Turkey and married Louis Sbiral on October 8, 1940, at Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey. Together they farmed west of Spillville in Sumner Township.
After Louis’ death in 1966 she married Herbert Wenthold on June 26, 1971, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. They farmed south of Festina until they moved into Calmar in 1975. Helen was devoted to her faith and family and enjoyed baking and cooking. She was the kind of hostess who would welcome a guest no matter the time of night, and would never allow anyone to leave hungry. Her dressing, pies and kolaches were special family favorites. Helen also enjoyed dancing and listening to polka music. She worked as a cook at the South Winn Country Club and at Aase Haugen Nursing Home. Helen was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America in Ossian, and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Spillville.
Helen is survived by her son: Robert Sbiral, Spillville, IA. Her daughter: Norma (Joe) Kremer, Cedar Rapids, IA. Two step-daughters: Shirley (LeRoy) Bohr, Ossian, IA, and Mary Lou (Jim) Busta, Spring Grove, MN. Two step-sons: Larry (Sandra) Wenthold, Atkinson, IL, and Terry (Mary Ann) Wenthold, Fort Atkinson, IA. Twenty grandchildren and many great grandchildren. One sister: Dolores (Fredolin “Lyn”) Schwade, Cresco, IA. Four sisters-in-law: Alice Barloon, Little Turkey, IA, and Bernice Karnik, Little Turkey, IA, Darlene Sbiral, Waterloo, IA, and Ruth New Hampton, IA.
Helen was preceded in death by her first husband: Louis Sbiral on July 27, 1966. Her second husband: Herb Wenthold on March 7, 2000. Her parents: Frank and Anna Barloon. One step-son: Kenneth Wenthold on Nov. 28, 1947. Three brothers: Arnold Barloon, Edward (Mary) Barloon and Joseph Barloon.
