William Francis Sweeney was born in 1873, in Ireland. He was the son of Edmond Sweeney and Ellen Shea. He married Margaret Maher in Wales, where they lived until immigrating to the US in 1903 and settled in Scranton, Pennsylvania, with the following children: John, Eileen, Edmund, and Vera Mary. After settling in Scranton, they had three more children: Patricia (Sister M. Edmund, IHM), William Francis Jr., and Rita. He retired after being a boiler maker for many years at the Keyser Valley cars shops of the Lackawanna Railroad.
William died on December 2, 1943 at home in Scranton, and was buried in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton, PA.
