GILES CLAY DIES AT AGE OF NINETY- FOUR YEARS TODAY
One of the Original Randolph Slaves Dies at Hospital Today. One of Piqua's oldest and most picturesque figures passed forever from the city's life today when death took Giles Clay, 94 year old ex-slave, at Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for the past several weeks and had submitted to an operation Monday morning. Giles Clay, who occupied a place in the affectionate regard of the many Piqua people who knew him, was born in Virginia on August 1st, 1835, his father being overseer of the plantation where he first saw the light of day. His mother was one of the well known Randolph slaves and in 1816, when John Randolph bought land In this vicinity and freed the men and women who had been his property, Giles came to Ohio with his mother and four sisters and brothers and settled in Piqua where he has made his home ever since. Arriving In Piqua at the age of 5 years, he was enabled to receive a better education than fell to the lot of small plantation boys in the south. He profited by the teaching he received, which has enabled him to occupy positions of trust all o! his life. Nobody knew more of old Piqua history and nobody knew Piqua people better.. He had a smile and nod for each of his many friends, who will miss him from his favorite haunts, clad in his long tan-colored overcoat, his kindly old face with his patriarchal beard and his humorous eyes twinkling beneath the brim of his slouch hat, "Mr. Clay" as everybody called him, wore numerous suits of clothes as precaution against the wintry air, his coat lapels literally filled with the pins that he superstitously picked up wherever he spied one. He married and was the father of four children of whom Charles and Mary preceded him in death, while two daughters, Clemmie and Susie, survive him. Funeral announcements will made later.
