Macauley, Ward was born December 30, 1923 in Richmond Hill, New York. Son of James Oliver Ward and Jocelyn (Ward) M.

Ward Macauley, American dean, retired career officer. Decorated Air medal with 3 bronze oak leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross. Member District Flying Cross Society (treasurer 1996-2000).

Commissioned 2d. lieutenant United States Army, 1942, advanced through grades to colonel, 1969, retired, 1974; professor accounting Mesa College, San Diego, 1974-1979, associate dean, 1979-1981, dean school business, 1988-1990, San Diego City College, 1982-1987; President Darwell Company, San Diego, 1967-1974; forensic auditor United States Attorney, Southern California, 1980-1982.

By direction of the President, under the provisions of Army Regulation 600-45 as amended, and pursuant to authority vested in me by the Commanding General, Mediterranean Theater of Operations. Ward Macauley, First Lieutenant, Air Corps, 47th Bombardment Group (L) is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross: For extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as bombardier In A-20 and A-26 types aircraft. On 19 April 1945. Lieutenant Macauley flew in a night attack upon heavily fortified may buildings at Sassuolo, Italy. Displaying superior professional skill sad resourcefulness, Lieutenant Macauley guided his pilot through adverse weather to the briefed initia1 point. Then setting course for a perfect run over the objective. Lieutenant Macauley released his bombs with devastating effect on these vital military positions. On more than fifty combat missions, his outstanding proficiency and steadfast devotion to duty have reflected great credit up himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.

* (1) - In 1909, Lydia's maternal grandparents contributed to the conservation purchase of 56 acres in Western North Carolina, thus setting in motion a conservation tradition that continues to this day. In addition to Lydia's service on the Mainspring Board of Directors, she also serves as a trustee of Highlands Biological Foundation. Lydia was the photo and copy editor of the 2012 book Highlands Botanical Garden: A Naturalist's Guide. After earning a degree in biology from Knox College, Lydia worked in medical research and various other jobs. She then served for 10 years as a Natural Area Preservation Specialist for the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission and later the Illinois Nature Conservancy, and was instrumental in the dedication of 35 Illinois Nature Preserves.
