Chatsworth-- Chatsworth native Kenneth Henry Hummel, 80, of Salt Lake City, UT died Sunday, March 26, 2000.
His funeral was held March 30 at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, Salt Lake City. Burial was in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Salt Lake City, with military rites accorded.
Visitation was held for two hours March 29 and for one hour prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Hummel was born Jan. 9, 1920, at Chatsworth, the son of Frank Antone and Anna Corlena (Hornickel) Hummel. He married Darlene Delta Johnson on Nov. 2, 1945, at Salt Lake City. She survives.
Mr. Hummel was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during World War II. He participated in the landing on Utah Beach on D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, among many other major battles, receiving many military honors. He was also decorated by the Belgian government.
Following his military service, Mr. Hummel and his wife returned to Chatsworth, where they farmed for 17 years.
In 1962, he moved his family to Salt Lake City and was a landscape contractor for 21 years before retiring.
He served as president of the UAN and received the Utah Nurseryman and Landscape Contractor of the Year Award in 1987 for his service to the industry.
Mr. Hummel devoted many hours to the creation and maintenance of the M. Olympus State Ball Park and facilities.
He enjoyed participating in and watching sports. He set several records in high school that still stand today in the Illinois State High School sports. He played baseball and basketball, and bowled in his young years. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing and ice fishing.
Mr. Hummel was an avid Utah Jazz fan.
