PEORIA -- Josephine Kathryn Kalkwarf, 84, of 1214 E. Elmhurst died at 5:35 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 1997, at her residence.

Born Aug. 16, 1912, in Chatsworth to Frank and Lena Hornickle Hummel, she married the Rev. Alfred E. Kalkwarf on Oct. 15, 1938, in Chatsworth. He died Feb. 9, 1963. Surviving are one son, the Rev. Theodore P. of Oconomowoc, Wis.; two daughters, Kay E. Kalkwarf of Peoria and Dr. Joan L. Kalkwarf of El Paso, Texas; three brothers, Vernon Hummel and Gerald Hummel, both of Chatsworth, and Kenneth Hummel of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters, Irene Kemnetz of Piper City and Gladys Laue of Arlington Heights; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A 1934 graduate of Augustana Hospital School of Nursing, she worked at Cornell Medical Center in New York and also was a private duty nurse. She worked for Bel-Wood Nursing Home from 1963 to 1978, where she served as assistant director of nursing and later as director of nursing. She also served with her husband in the ministry at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chatsworth, Christ Lutheran Church in Haysville, Ind., and St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Glasford.

She was a board member of the Lutheran Women of Greater Peoria. She was a volunteer at the Lutheran Home gift shop and Church Mouse Thrift Shop through Lutheran Social Services. She was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Peoria, its Business Women's Circle and the Young at Heart Club.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at her church. The Rev. Barbara Ziah will officiate. Visitation will be two hours before services at the church. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Chatsworth Cemetery. Cumerford-Endsley-Diggle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
