Married 29 September 1858, probably in Kaufman County, Texas, to Harriet Roxanne Bell. Son of Edward Bruton Matchett and Sara Risher. Burial place of Sarah Risher Matchett is probably Mississippi.

Richard Matchett along with his mother, brother, Henry, and Sister (md. a Vaughn) came from Mississippi to Texas around 1853 since we have documents concerning pre-emption claims for land in (Kennard) Houston Co., Texas. Richard and his mother each had 320 adjoining acres and built one house with half of it on Richard's land and the other half on his mother's land in order to meet the pre-emption requirements.

Sarah Matchett sold her land to Richard for $600 on 15 April 1865. It was probably about this time that she returned to Mississippi where she died 1 June 1866.

The 1880 census shows Richard Matchett living in Houston Co., Texas, with one of his sons. Research notes for DAR application of one of his gr-granddaughters shows him to be buried in Jim English Cemetery.
