Ray was the son of Levi & Mary Headlee. He grew up on the family farm in Polk county, NE. He joined the U.S. Army during World War I and after his discharge, worked as a drayman in Oakdale, NE. He reenlisted into the Army in 1922.
Ray married Violet Ruby Thompson in April 1925 in Omaha, NE. They lived in Omaha and Ray worked as a barber. They had children: Eugene (adopted son), Phyllis and Lloyd.
