FATHER of Samuel W., William "Henry", John M., George S., Mary Elizabeth (Stedham), Anna H., Sarah Eliza (Frandsen, Matkins).

SON of unknown Safford & Mary Ann "Polly" Swartz (who married 2nd John "George" Silvius, aka Silfee, and had sons William, Benjamin & John Silfee).

Isaac was an infant when his mother remarried and appears to have grown up using his step-father's name. Records to 1850 are as Isaac Silfee (Silfees, etc). Beginning in 1850, records are for Isaac Safford.

Isaac was a charter member of the Covington (PA) Fencibles,a citizen homeguard/militia group (1846-1850, as Isaac Silfee. 1850 on, as Isaac Safford).

He served in the Civil War, enlisting Sep. 15, 1864 in the 199th PA Inf., Co. I. Description, 5'3" tall, black hair, grey eyes, dark complexion. Mustered out with his company June 28, 1865.

"DIED: Ferry-Isaac Safford, born Nov. 4, 1826, died Sept. 13, 1895, he would have been 69 years old in Nov. He died of injuries received by being thrown from a wagon with a runaway team. He was born in or near Greenville, Luzerne Co., Penn [1]. Early life spent in Lackwana Co. [2], PA, and Wayne Co., in Salem. He married Miss Mary J. Edwards, Sept. 27, 1851, Elder Mitton Clark [3], Madisonville, offic. Born to them, 7 children [4], 4 boys & 3 girls. Samuel W. [5] living in Tioga Co., PA., William W. [6], Salem, PA., John M., Oklahoma, George S., Portland, Ore., Mary E. & Sarah E. & his widow in Gerry, WA., Anna H. killed by a falling tree at Treplerville [7], Wayne Co., PA. Moved from PA, to Table Rock, Neb. in 1877, removed after 2 yrs. to Kansas in Graham Co., 1879, remained there 9 years. & from there to Ferry, Lewis Co., WA. where he has lived 7 yrs. He enlisted as a private, Sept. 1864 he filled the office of Quartermaster, to Co. I & 199 Reg. Inf., PA. volunteers, thus receiving $6.00 month pension. A member of the G.A.R. Post 66 [8] at the time of his death. Mr. & Mrs. Safford's son-in-law, George C. Frandsen, Sarah E. husband was killed instantly by a falling tree 4 mos. ago. He left a widow & 4 dependent children. Mr. Fransden was killed, May 14th. Mr. Swafford [9] was injured Sept. 9th, died the 13th."

1-Greenville, later Nay-Aug (NOT where Nay-Aug park is today), Dunmore Borough, Luzerne (eff. 1878 Lackawanna Co.), 3 mi east of Scranton, at the point of Cobb's Gap on the Gravity Railroad, but on the opposite side of Roaring Brook.
2-Lackwana is Lackawanna, formed in 1878 from Luzerne.
3-Mitton Clark is Milton Clark, Physician & Surgeon and Pastor of Christian Church, Madisonville, PA.
4 & 5-Sam is Isaac's son, but we have no reason to believe he is Mary Jane's (though she raised him from under age 2 and considered him her own).
6-William W. is William Henry, called Henry.
7-Treplerville is surely Tresslerville, near Lake Ariel, Wayne Co., PA.
8-G.A.R Post 66 was in Mossyrock, Lewis Co., WA
9-Swafford is Safford
