David Capps (not to be confused with his cousin, David Kenny Capps), although born in Tennessee, lived most of his life in Lincoln County, Missouri. It was in that county that an ordained minister, Abraham Welty, performed the marriage ceremony that united David and Sarah ("Sallie") Goodwin in marriage on December 31, 1835.

Between 1837 and 1858, David and Sallie had 11 children: Elizabeth, Thomas, Bartlett, Willis, Parmelia, Lucinda, David Nelson (sometimes shown as Nelson David), William Martin, Mariah, Eliza, and Dona.
