Son of Rev. John Wilton Cunningham & Samantha Ingram Cunningham, he was educated in the public schools of Kentucky & worked for several retailers there before moving to St. Louis in 1869. He there married Georgia Lee on 28 October 1880. They had one child, Albert Lee Cunningham.

He was with the Southwestern Book & Publishing Company for five years, then worked in several capacities similar to this until, in 1889 he became the secretary of the board of trustees of the Missouri Botanical Garden & business manager of the estate of the late Henry Shaw which was to for use by the Missouri Botanical Garden.

He was prominently connected with almost every movement to promote the advancement of musical interests & for many years was a church singer & concert singer. He was for eight years the secretary & treasurer of the St. Louis Choral-Symphony Society.
