William E. Meighen

William Edward Meighen, 63, of 442 Arbor Court, Waynesburg, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, 1984, in Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a brief illness.

Mr. Meighen was general manager of the Greene County office of the Observer-Reporter, where he had been employed for 34 years.

He was born June 27, 1921, in Morgan Township, a son of Olive Murphy Meighen of Waynesburg and the late James L. Meighen.

He graduated from Waynesburg High School and from Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, Va., and attrended Waynesburg College, playing on the football teams at all three schools. He was on the Waynesburg College team which played in the nation's first televised game against Fordham University in 1939.

Mr. Meighen entered military service in 1939 as a member of Company K, 110th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard, and was with the unit when it entered federal service in February 1941. In 1942 he transferred from the infantry to the U.S. Army Air Force and an aviation cadet.

He graduated from flight school as a pilot and was commissioned in June 1943. He was a command pilot assigned to the English Air Force's 329th Bombardment Group in England, from where he flew 32 B-24 raids over Germany, France and Belgium. His military decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and a Distinguished Unit Citation.

Following the war, he was a teller at the First National Bank and Trust Co. of Waynesburg until he joined the Observer-Reporter as a staff reporter in Waynesburg in 1950. He was named general manager of the Greene County Office in 1956.

Mr.Meighen had served as a member of the board of trustees at Greene County Memorial Hospital and was a charter member of the Waynesburg VFW post. He was a member of the Greene County Country Club and had been active in the Waynesburg College Booster's Club.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Jesse L. Reed Meighen, whom he married July 1, 1943; a son, a daughter, seven grandchildren; a sister, and several nieces and nephews.
