Winston-Salem - Mr. William Boyd Barnes died at the age of 89. He was born on June 3, 1925 in Stoneville, NC to the late John Garland Barnes and Annie Idell Honeycutt Barnes. He served in the Marine Corp during World War II in the Pacific, and was without question, one of America's greatest generation. After the war he was selected to become one of the few and proud Marines to serve in the Marine Color Guard which travelled all over the country showcasing military precision in drills and ceremonies. After becoming a civilian he went to work for Western Electric where he retired after more than 30 years of service. He married the late Helen Elizabeth Bowman Barnes of Winston-Salem and was happily married for 64 years. He was a kind and loving husband, and a wonderful father. We were very lucky to have him, and will always remember his selflessness, courage and generosity. He and his family were members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his son, William Marcus Barnes and wife Linda of Virginia Beach, VA, and his daughter, Lisa Barnes Cooper and husband Philip of Walnut Cove, NC; and five grandchildren, Josh Barnes and wife Chelsea of Winterpark, Florida, Hunter Barnes of Virginia Beach, VA, Jake Cooper and wife Meghan of Winston-Salem, NC, and Sam and Hope Cooper of Walnut Cove, NC. A funeral service will be conducted at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, June 3 at 2:00 pm in the nave with interment afterwards in the Louisa Bitting Dalton Memorial Garden.
