Son of Ebenezer and Lydia Cook Adams of Kingston, MA. Charles was one of eleven children, seven boys and four girls.

Charles followed his father to the sea when he was quite young. He predominately sailed between Kingston, MA and North Carolina, both as a passenger seeking opportunities outside Massachusetts and as a Captain.
During the War of 1812, the war over "Free Trade and Sailors' Rights", Charles chose to take the risk of capture by the British for the high premiums earned for running the blockade. He and his business survived.
In his final years, Charles Adams minded his farm, cared for his family and was "deservedly esteemed and respected by all". Charles took a particular interest in his family history, carefully preserving and recording family information he found. According to the Adams genealogist, he "rendered essential service" to the publishing of the Adams Genealogy in 1861.
At the age of 89, in 1867, Charles Adams died.
