FAY, Theodore S.
Schriftsteller (American 19th century diplomat and writer). One of the founding fathers of the American Church in Berlin.
Died: November 24, 1898, in Berlin, Germany
Age at death: 91 years, 9 months
Died of: Lungenentzündung (inflammation of the lungs, i.e. pneumonia)
Last address: Kalkreuthstrasse 9, Berlin, Germany
Date of burial: November 27, 1898
Cemetery: Friedrich-Werderscher Kirchhof (Cemetery), Kirchhof Alter
Luisenstadt, Am Südstern 8-12 (Bergmannstrasse), 10961 Berlin, Germany
Location of burial plot: Abteilung “Allee” (Section “Main Path”), Reihe (row) 3, Nr. 18.
Sources:
(1) Kirchenbücher (parish registers), Archiv der Evangelische Kirche Berlin-Brandenburg (EKiBB) in the Evangelische Zentralarchiv (EZA), Berlin, Germany; Microfiche envelope No. 5191/Microfiche No. 4, page 209 (for November 1898), Line-entry No. 40a.
(2) Beerdigungsjournal (burial register), of the Friedrich-Werderscher Kirchhof (Cemetery), Kirchhof Alter Luisenstadt, Am Südstern 8-12 (Bergmannstrasse), 10961 Berlin, Germany, 1898, Entry No. 672 (Fay, Theodor).
Explanatory Comments: In March 2009, Frau Tonn, the administrative clerk at the Friedrich-Werderscher Kirchhof, informed me that (1) as no pastor’s name is recorded, a German state-church pastor probably was not present. [The pastor of the American Church in Berlin, Dr. James Dickie, most probably gave the service]; (2) Second Class burials often did not have headstones and many such burials at that time were simply close alongside one another in long unmarked rows; (3) It was a burial (ein Erdbestattung), not a cremation; (4) As there was no “Verlängerung” (extension, renewal) of the grave plot, and no one is listed as having requested the burial in the first place, or is listed as next of kin, the plot most likely remained uncared for over the years and, after 25 years, would have routinely been cleared to make way for other burials; (5) The precise location of old 19th century 2nd Class graves has not survived. Since the lay-out of the cemetery is different now from what it was originally, there is no way (short of personal family records) to determine just where Fay’s plot had been. The general area of the plot was in the lower portion of Section A (to the right of the main path (the ”Allee”); (6) The Beerdigungsjournal (burial register) will never go to an archive because it is the property of the Cemetery Administration; when it deteriorates and becomes illegible, its contents will be lost to future researchers. At the time of my visit, there were no plans to microfilm the register(s).
