Dean was born June 1, 1935, to Hans and Irene (Meyer) Carstens at Winside. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Winside High School. He entered the Army on June 7, 1954, and received his honorable discharge June 6, 1956. After working several places, Dean work for L. E. Ball in Norfolk. After the passing of Mr. Ball, Dean managed the company until its sale. Dean then went to work for Pollard Pumping, retiring in 2004.
Dean married Sharon Huebner on Nov. 13, 1960, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Norfolk.
Dean loved to fish and camp but most of all spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Dean is survived by his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Rebecca Carstens and Brenda Carstens, both of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Tonya and Josh Kallhoff of Elgin, Josh and Carrie Carstens of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Daniel and Zacadia Carstens of Norfolk; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nancy and Clark Bauer and Mary Otto, both of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, a sister and a daughter, Cheryl, in infancy.
