NICHOLAS KENKEL
Nicholas Kenkel was born on a farm near Earling December 8, 1889 to N. Klaus Kenkel (September 24, 1861) of Machor, Luxemburg, and Anna Altman (February 14, 1868) of Eich, Luxemburg. They both came to the U.S. in March 1882 but did not meet until they reached Avoca. Nick's brothers and sisters are: Bernard, Theodore, Josephine, Emil, Victoria (Dora), Elizabeth, Henry, Mary, and Lawrence. Nick attended country school near Earling and came to Defiance in 1914.
He married Mary Eckerman November 27, 1919, at Defiance. Her father was Louis Eckerman, born in Hanover, Germany. Her mother, Catherine Goetzmeier, was born in Berger, Missouri. Her brothers and sisters are: Herman, Josephine, Louis, Celia, Fredrick, August, Clara, Arthur and Henry .
Nick and Mary's children are: Francis, Helen, Clarence, Mildred, Eileen, Alice, Madonna, Robert, Mary and Nicholas.
Nick was engaged in farming. Nick served in World War I, 69th Heavy Artillery Corps, and was overseas for eight months. He was Commander of American Legion, President of Federal Land Bank for over 20 years, Parish Trustee of St. Peter's Parish, Director of Union No.1 Country School and Greeley No.3, and a member of St. Peter's Parish.
Nick now lives in Defiance and is retired.
