Bernadetta peacefully passed away in her sleep June 8, 2015, at her home. She was the beloved wife of 52 years to Ed Dowd; loving mother of Tom Dowd, Jim Dowd, and Mary Pat Slate. She was a long-time resident of Burlingame and enjoyed a long career as a Registered Nurse at Seton Medical Center.
Bernie was born June 3, 1938 in Price, Utah the daughter of John Doyle ("J.D.") Harris and Mary Etta Harris. She was one of thirteen children. She was preceded in death by her brothers Leo P. of Valdez, Alaska, Joseph of Price, Utah, David J. of Whittier, CA, Robert of Price, Utah, and sisters, Arlene V. Snow of Agoura, CA, Sr. Patricia, Daughter of Charity, of Los Altos Hills, CA and Mary E. Ward of Whittier, CA. She is survived by her brothers, Vincent P. of Sacramento, CA, M. James of Soldotna, Alaska and John P. of Vista, CA. She is also survived by her sons, Tom Dowd (and Renee) of Boynton Beach, FL, Jim Dowd of Sacramento, CA and her daughter, Mary Pat Slate (and Ed) and grandchildren, Annjelika, Annika and Jordan of Hollister, CA. Numerous nieces and nephews were also an important part of her life.
She graduated from the Mary's Help College of Nursing in 1959. She married Edward Francis Dowd on November 24, 1962 in San Francisco, CA. She served as a Registered Nurse at Seton Medical Center (formerly Mary's Help Hospital) in Daly City, CA until 1994 when she had to retire early due to medical reasons.
Bernie loved to care for others, spend time with family, cook and vacation at their cabin at Wrights Lake, CA. She also enjoyed going on cruises with her family to destinations like Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Panama, etc. A main source of joy for her was being around her grandkids and being part of their many activities, holidays and family events.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, June 15, 2015 at the Crosby - N. Gray & Co. Funeral Home, 2 Park Road, Burlingame, CA.
A private interment will be held at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.
