It is almost impossible to decipher anything from the photograph. I ran my fingers in the carving, and determined that the name was William Sutherland. In a survey completed in July 1999, the name was also recorded as William Sutherland: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/fairfax/cemeteries/Sydenstricker.txt

From woodtracer: William Sutherland, son of Fendall and Mary Hamilton Childs Sutherland, was born about 1744 in King William County, Virginia. His mother possibly died in childbirth. He married Mary Ann "Polly" Owen in 1766 in Burke County, Virginia. They had at least six children during their marriage. William fought in the Revolutionary War, achieving the rank of Captain. He died in Newington, Virginia, on January 20, 1803, at the age of 59. He is buried in Sydenstricker Methodist Church Cemetery in Fairfax County, Virginia.
