William V. "Bill" Humphreys

Reedsport - Funeral services for William V. "Bill" Humphreys, 71, Reedsport, were held Saturday, April 17, at St. John Apostle Catholic Church. Graveside services will follow.

He was born July 19, 1921, at Kimberly, and died April 14, 1993 at his home in Reedsport of natural causes.

He graduated from Dayville High School and spent all his early years on the family sheep ranch there. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an electrician's mate on the USS Knox in the Pacific.

He moved to Reedsport in 1957, to work for the Umpqua National Bank. He was the manager when the bank was taken over by the Oregon Bank in 1970. He continued there as a senior vice-president and manager until his retirement in 1980. After a very short retirement, he became a vice-president at Pacific State Bank until his second retirement in 1988.

Over the years, Bill was active in his community in many ways. In the 1950s, he was president of the Chamber of Commerce. Later, he served on the school board and the port commission. It was while he was on the port commission that the jetties were constructed. He also served on many local and county-wide committees.

While his kids were in school, he was also actively involved in Reedsport's athletic program. He and Doc Courtney were familiar sights at home football games carrying the down markers for many years.

Bill and his family were members of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church. They were also members of Forest Hills Country Club, where Bill will be remembered as a fun-loving golfer who preferred woods to irons. He earned a hole-in-one card on Father's Day in 1988, playing golf with two of his sons.

His retirement was a special joy. He took pride in being "Team Grandpa" at his grandchildren's school and sporting events. He also spent a good part of his time planning his annual hunting trip to Buckhorn.

"He will be remembered as a fair and honest banker, a loyal friend, and a loving husband and father," says his family. "No one will forget the pleasure he took in a water, a good controversy, or an official who missed a call."

Survivors include his wife, Marne; daughters, Mary Bush of Auburn and Margaret Myers of Newberg; sons, Bill Jr. of Redmond, Bob of Reedsport, Jim of Eugene, Paul of Sumner, and Ray of Newberg; sister, Gladys Brown of Prineville; brother, Trevor of Salem; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family requests those who wish to recognize Bill's life and contributions to the community may make donations to the Braves Booster Club through a special account set up at Pacific State Bank, Box 107, Reedsport, 97467.
