Sarah Sadler Woods, 98, died peacefully on June 9, 2015, in Virginia Beach. Born August 31, 1916, she grew up in Portsmouth and Norfolk, the daughter of James Olin Sadler and Ray Brown Sadler.
She was predeceased by her son Sterling Sadler Woods, a Silver Star recipient during the Vietnam War. She was also predeceased by her brothers, James Pearce Sadler and Joseph Bernard Sadler. She leaves behind her sister-in-law, Virginia Bowlby Sadler, as well as many nieces and nephews and their children. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Virginia Beach.
Dance was a vital part of Sarah's life, she began her professional dance career, performing at age 8. She started teaching dance in her teens. She went to New York as a young woman to study dance, paying for her lessons by modeling. During World War II, she was a "Red Cross Girl," responsible for creating recreational and entertainment programs for Air Force pilots in England, where she remained until the end of the war. She returned as the bride of a decorated pilot, Sidney Sterling Woods. Back in the States, she opened a dance school in La Jolla, California. With her young son, she returned to Virginia Beach in 1952, and established the Sarah Sadler School of Dance. In addition to teaching ballet, modern, jazz and occasionally tap, she was a popular ballroom dance instructor and had fond memories of dances and cotillions at the Cavalier Beach Club. Sarah leaves a tremendous legacy in the generations of young people she motivated and encouraged in their pursuit of dance as well as in their general approach to life. She will be long remembered by many in the Virginia Beach community. She was much loved as the family story teller, the favorite aunt, always glamorous and full of life.
A memorial service will be conducted Monday June 15, 2015 at 10:00 AM at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel by Reverend Albert G. Butzer, III.
Burial will be in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery.
