Born as Mathias Sigl on September 12, 1834, son of Anton Sigl and Anna Maria Ammer, in Pfarrkofen, Hohenthann, Landshut, Bavaria, he was orphaned at the age of 14 when his parents both died in the same year. His oldest brother, Johann Baptist Sigl, inherited the family farm in Pfarrkofen.

On May 15, 1866, Mathias married Theresa Eineichner at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Loiching, Dingolfing, Bavaria. Mathias and Theresa lived at # 62 Loiching, the former home of Theresa's father, Joseph Eineichner. Four children were born to them in Loiching: Maria b: May 20, 1867, Theres b: March 27, 1873/d: July 27, 1873, Matthäus b: Oct 16, 1874 and Theres July 22, 1880.

On March 14, 1882, the Sigl family moved to #1 Obergambach, Hohenthann, Landshut, Bavaria, a hamlet of only four small farms located about 16 miles from Loiching, and only 1 mile from Mathias' birthplace of Pfarrkofen.

When he emigrated in August, 1891, Mathias travelled under a new name, Leonard Zierer, with his daughter, Marie. After several months in Detroit, MI and Meire Grove, MN, Leonard purchased a farm in Buh Township, 3 miles north of Pierz from Matt Ruff on May 24, 1892. His wife, Theresa, sold the farm in Obergambach on March 10, 1892 and emigrated with their daughter, Theresia, and granddaughter, Theresia, and joined the rest of the family in Pierz.
