Nathan was born in Medfield, MA to Nathaniel Smith & Susannah Hinsdale. His family moved early to Sturbridge MA where his uncle Joseph Smith was the first man to spend the winter. He was a private during the Revolution, serving in various regiments between April 19, 1775 and August 1, 1778. He was 5'6" and dark complection.
He married Sarah Pike daughter of John & Sarah. They had three children, Nathan Jr, William & Permelia at Sturbridge and moved to Claremont, NH in 1785. From there they moved with to Franklin County after 1797. Nathan settled on Swanton Hill near Fairfield Pond where he was a farmer.
His descendants placed this marker at Greens Corners Cemetery more than a hundred years after his death.
