David arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Echo Company was on a patrol when David detonated hostile booby trapped mine, 5 kilometers north northwest of Dien Ban.
David died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the head, chest and abdomen while being given medical treatment aboard the USNH USS Sanctuary.
