We have had a crow who has lived near our house for the past few years. Every year, he and his mate have a chick and our neighbors watch with us while it grows to adulthood, being careful to avoid the nest, as much as is possible. This year, their chick fell from the nest earlier than is normal and it's parents were quite understandably upset, cawing and staying close by in the trees in our backyard, as the chick hopped around our backyard, unable to fly yet, let alone fly upwards, which is the sign that it is old enough to be on it's own. We put some food (old canned cat food) in a bowl for it to eat and our kitties would watch from my bedroom window, as they never were allowed outside and we wanted the chick to be as safe as possible. It has been unusually warm this year, and, for whatever reason, the chick died yesterday. My dear sister, who has had to face a number of losses within the past year, is very upset, as is a neighbor who has also been watching this life drama play out, and I also am very sad that the fledgling didn't make it. We will be burying it in our yard, where out kitties and dogs have been buried previously, among the lovely flowers my sister so carefully and lovingly tends. I know the crow was flown up to Heaven and is at the Rainbow Bridge with other creatures of our Lord God. The young crow was quite large so we don't know why it died. The parents have been calling for it, off and on, but must know it is no longer living. I know that all fledglings have that dangerous period of time in their young lives when they can almost fly, as their flight feathers have come in, but they need to be able to fly upwards as well, which is when there is a real danger that a neighborhood cat could get to it, but the parents were very vigilant, even dive bombing the garbage men the other morning. I can only believe that, for whatever reason, this young bird that we watched for over a week and became attached to emotionally, is with God's other creatures and, for whatever reason, was not meant to live a full life.
