Born in the former Alt Arcis, Akkerman, Bessarabia, South Russia.Ferdinand was born in Alt-Arzis, Bessarabia, South Russia, now Ukraine. He was the son of Johann Georg Weiss 1801-1875 and Karoline Salzsiedler 1808-1908. His first marriage was on November 13, 1870 in Alt-Arzis to Henrietta Sinkbeil 24 Jan 1849-1885. According to one of Ferdinand's granddaughters, he married circa 1887, Anna Marie Gehring 1862-1944, his servant. They immigrated to America in 1901 and made their home in Warden, Grant County, Washington. Both Ferdinand and Anna Marie "Mary" Weis (Ferdinand changed spelling from Weiss to Weis)are buried in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Apparently, the name "Wies" on the marker was a result of family members pronouncing their last name in an Anglo-Saxon way.
