Gerald D. “Gary” Friar, age 63, of Warsaw, Missouri, passed away Monday morning, April 28, 2008, at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton, Missouri. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 2, 1944, the son of Quentin O. and Mary Frances Jones Friar.

Gary grew up in Miller, Missouri, and graduated from Miller High School in the class of 1962. In 1964 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving eighteen months overseas as a combat veteran of the Vietnam War receiving two Purple Hearts for wounds received in action. Upon returning to the states he served as a drill Instructor at the Marine Corps recruiting depot in San Diego, California.

In 1968 he attended the Missouri State Highway Patrol Academy, in Rolla, Missouri, completing six months of extensive training. He then served sixteen years as a highway patrolman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol. From 1980 to 1982 he served as Assistant Zone Commander finishing his career with the rank of Corporal.

From December of 1982 to December 31, 1990, he worked as General Manager, of the Long Shoal Marina on Truman Lake near Warsaw. He then served as a Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Army Corp of Engineers. He then served as the Warsaw Chief of Police for seven years from July 28, 1993 to December 31, 2000. In 2000 he was elected Sheriff of Benton County serving for the next four years, finishing his law enforcement career of thirty-two years. In 1995 Gary was recognized as the American Legion Police Officer of the Year and once in April of 1996 and again in August of 1997, Gary received Commendations for Bravery and Exceptional Service from the Mayor and the Board of Alderman of Warsaw,

On May 2, 1970, he was united in marriage to Sharon Ann East at the Christian Church in Clinton, Missouri. Following their marriage they made their home in Warsaw, Missouri. Unto this union one daughter and one son were born.

Their first born child was their daughter, Alisha. She was their first joy. Gary was always there for the tea parties, birthday parties, dressing up for Halloween, and the bright red shirt at Christmas time and the white hair let Alisha know who Santa Claus was. And then the boys started coming around. How would you feel coming to the Friar home to see Alisha. Gary would always greet you with a big smile and a welcome handshake, with a gun on his hip, twenty or so other firearms in close proximity and all of his other trophies hanging on the wall. Alisha was his college graduate and she gave him his grandchildren, all of which made him a proud father.

Gary was an avid outdoorsman. Every fall there was deer hunting and duck hunting as time would allow. Not just any deer – Gary was a trophy hunter and he has mounts on the walls of his home to prove it. Gary was an accomplished, licensed taxidermist, doing his own mounts and mounts of deer, fish, and water fowl for many other hunters for the past forty years.

For several years Sherry was his closest hunting partner. Wherever Gary went Sherry was sure to go. And she has her own trophies to attest to that. When Jared came along the planning for hunting trips changed considerably. As Jared came of age he was right there with his dad. They were father and son for sure but even more they were best friends forever. Now came the hunting trips to Colorado and Wyoming for elk and antelope, and Iowa, Oklahoma and Texas, hunting deer and even havelina. Gary taught Jared everything a man wants to give his son to know including hunting and sportsmanship and life’s little lessons.

Gary was also the proud grandfather looking forward to watching his family grow and learn – anxious to share his love and all of those little lessons. That is not yet complete but his legacy will be there for years to come and his grandchildren will forever benefit from that legacy.

Gary was a member of American Legion Post in Miller, Missouri. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, the First United Methodist Church of Warsaw, the Warsaw Area Chamber of Commerce, the Truman Lake Association, and the Truman Lake Guide Association.

Gary is survived by his wife, Sherry, of the home, one daughter, Alisha Ann Holt, and her husband, Jeremy, of Lincoln, Missouri, one son, Jared Gavin Friar, of Warsaw, three grandchildren, Rakaylah Ann, Eastynn Wyatt, and Daveigha Ann, and two-step grandchildren, Austin Wade and Benjamin Ryan Holt, his mother, Mary Frances Friar, of Miller, Missouri, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw with Pastor Leonard Poppe and Rev. Wally Baldwin officiating. Military Rites and Burial will be in the Shawnee Cemetery in Warsaw. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Gary D. Friar Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.
