Herbert Grant Adcox, age 86, a prominent business owner and resident of Chattanooga, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, June 25, 2015 in a local hospital.
He was " the quintessential car guy" who began his career in 1949 when he opened a dealership in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He moved to Chattanooga in 1955 and he operated a dealership with Edd Kirby. In 1968, Herb opened a dealership on Lee Highway which he operated until 2013. In 1990, 1991 and 1992, he was the Number 1 volume seller of Chevrolet S10 pickups in America. He was a past president of the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce, Goodwill Industries, the Chattanooga Automotive Trades Association and the Tennessee Automotive Associaton. He also served on the board of the National Automotive Dealers Association. He was an avid UTC Mocs supporter and fan. Herb was a member of the McCallie Anderson Clyatt Sunday School Class at First Presbyterian Church Chattanooga.
Preceded in death by son, Grant Adcox; four brothers.
Survived by loving wife of 67 years, Jean Adcox of Chattanooga; daughter and son-in-law, Suzan and Dana Robinette; two grandchildren, Reaves(Ali) Robinette and Grace (Ian) Carruthers; several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service, attended by family members only, will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2015 in the Faith Chapel Mausoleum at Hamilton Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hixson with Rev. Larry Williams officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 27, 2015 from 1 PM to 4 PM and from 6 PM to 8 PM at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
