Alfred worked in construction for many years for several different companies until retiring in 1982. He served his country honorably during World War II in the Army Air Force and was a member of Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Colesville.
Survivors: Sons, Frederick M. of Tampa, Fla., William C. Mertl in New Jersey; sisters, Margaret E. Mertl and Evelyn D. Mertl, both of Allentown; grandson, Ryan Mertl in New York; many nieces and nephews.
Services: Family and friends are invited to call 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Heintzelman Funeral Home Inc., 326 Main St., Hellertown, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, 4101 Old Bethlehem Pike, Bethlehem. The interment with military honors at Calvary Cemetery, Limeport, will conclude services.
