Lydia Gifford was the daughter of Rufus and Ruth Sherman Gifford. Lydia and John Lippitt Eddy married in Collins, Erie County, New York on 6 February 1822 and moved with their family to Greenwich, Huron County, Ohio in 1834. John L. Eddy was a highly regarded member of the Society of Friends in both Collins and Greenwich, while Lydia was a founding member of the Greenwich Women's Meeting. The couple had 10 children: Reuben 1824-1876, Ira 1825-1894, Joseph b. 1827, Lucy b. 1829, Perlina , Ruth b. 1833, John Rufus 1835-1914, Sherman Gifford 1837-1911, Huldah 1842-1879, and Allen W. 1847.
