'The Steamboats of Lake Champlain 1809 to 1930' ....Mr Root was the Chief Engineer of the Company from 1827 to 1882 inclusive. beginning with the Company's first steamboat, the 'Franklin', Mr Root had charge of much of the construction and all of the maintenance of the twenty vessels which followed the 'Franklin' up to the time of the 'Chateaugay'. He represented the town in the Vermont legislature for three years, justice of the peace and other town offices. Elijah, was the son of Elijah and Lola Bogue Root. He and his wife, Elizabeth P.White were married December 11, 1831. They were the parents of one child, Maria L. Root 1832-1899.
