Mr JOHN ARUNDEL
The death occurred suddenly at his
home, early on Sunday morning, of
Mr John Arundel, 467 Townsend
Street, Albury, and formerly of "Fair
view," Gundowring. Though in
critical health for the past two years
he nevertheless led an active life, he
was fond of gardening and keenly
interested in social movements. He
belonged to a well known pioneer
family in the Kiewa Valley and
married Miss Hanorah Goonan, of
Dederang, another well-known family.
For the past 19 years he has been
living in Albury, where he endeared
himself to many by his genial, gener-
ous nature. His home was always an
open door to his large circle of friends,
those in trouble were sure of sincere
sympathy, and he was highly esteemed
for his integrity of character, his
self-sacrificing nature has always been
greatly appreciated by intimate friends
especially his immediate relatives.
Requiem Mass was celebrated at St
Augustine's Church, Wodonga, and
after the Rosary at 1.15 p.m. the
funeral cortege left for Yackandandah
cemetery where interment took place.
Rev Fathers Awburn and Owens led
the funeral which was one of the
largest seen in the district for some
time as many friends from the Kiewa
river, where he is still highly
esteemed, attended. The burial ser-
vice was read by Rev Father Ryan,
of Beechworth.
He is survived by his widow, two
daughters, Sister M. Carmel, Convent
of Mercy, Wodonga, Eileen, Mrs M.
McDonald (Red Bluff), and one son,
William (Bolga), four sisters, Mrs E
Riley (Albury), Mrs J. Ronan
(Wodonga), Mrs D. O'Neill (Sandy Creek),
Catherine (Sydney) and two brothers,
Patrick (Spotswood) and Thomas
(Gundowring).
The coffin bearers were Pat and Tom
Arundel brothers, Mick McDonald
son-in-law, William son, Harry and
Will Goonan, nephews. Pall bearers
were Harry Quirk, Steve, Ted, Harry
and Dan Arundel and Tom Goonan
nephews.
A touching mark of respect was
shown by the teachers and pupils of
St. Augustine's School. As the coffin
was being borne from the Church they
formed a guard of honour and then
filed out into the street where they
stood in respectful silence until the
cortege moved off.
