Viryl Magnuson was born October 23, 1914, to Andrew and Mabel (Knutson) Magnuson in Minneapolis. At age 2 and one half, Viryl and her family moved to a farm in the Brandon area. The family lived on the farm owned by Karn and Thor Knutson, viryl's grandparents. She attended country school in District 64. As a young girl, she worked at many places. At that time, there was much need for young girls to help with cooking, cleaning and many other household duties. Eventually she found work in Alexandria at the Traveler's Inn and Bethany Home.
As years passed, her uncles bought a home in Alexandria and Viryl and her uncles enjoyed their spacious home. Viryl enjoyed cooking, baking and especially gardening.
Viryl was in failing health and moved to Knute Nelson Memorial Home in 1995. She suffered severe hearing loss along with macular degeneration. It was a difficult adjustment for her because she loved being an independent person. Viryl loved her home very much. But she became accepting of her life at Knute Nelson Memorial Home.
On Marcy 13, 2006 Viryl died at age 91. She was preceded in death by one sister, June Cole; and one brother, Lynn Fatland. Viryl is survived by her sister, Pearl A. Johnson of Alexandria.
A funeral service was held March 17 at Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon. Rev. Tony Stockman officiated. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Casket bearers included Michael Johnson, Greg Johnson, Roger Rosengren, Leslie Carroll, Cortland Scherrer and Delphin Engel. Arrangements are with Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
