Susanna Cates was born June 11, 1846, in Ray County, Mo. Departed this life at the home of
her son Albert, near Rayville, July 3, 1926, age 82 years and 22 days. She was united in marriage
to George W. Adams, February 13, 1867. To this union 11 children were born, 3 dying in infancy. W. E.
Adams died March 31, 1910. Those who survive are Samuel, Polo; J. N., Saint Joseph; Albert, Rayville;
J.H., Chesterfield; E.O., Kansas City; Arthur, Lawson; Mrs. Mary Bice, Lawson.
She also leaves 17 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 3 sisters and 2 brothers and a host of friends
and other relatives. She was converted to God in early life and united with the Missionary Baptist Church
and lived a faithful member until the time of her going.
Her husband departed this life July 10, 1920, and preceded her to the land that is better. Truly she was a
good woman, a faithful wife, a loving mother, a kind obliging friend.
She had spent the entire 80 years of her life in Missouri and mostly in Ray County, undergoing the
hardships of the pioneer days, yet, with not a murmur or complaint, faithfully filling her place as wife and mother.
The funeral was held at Union on Monday afternoon in the presence of a very large crowd of friends,
conducted by A. F. Darrell, assisted by Rev. Joseph McAdams.
The remains were laid to rest in the Union Cemetery.
