Obituary:
James Munhall, one of the pioneer citizens of Urbana, died at his home 704 East Main Street at 5:45 Monday evening, after an illness of three weeks. He had not been well for several years as the result of a fall which greatly impaired his health about 13 years ago.

Mr. Munhall was born in Cumberland County, PA, September 25, 1825, and came to Urbana when he was about 21 years of age. He was married in November, 1851, to Miss Nancy Webber, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William T. Webber, two of the early settlers here. He engaged in cabinetmaking and the undertaking business. He built the first hearse ever seen in this city and used it for a number of years. Competition in later years caused Mr. Munhall to retire from this business. Soon thereafter he entered the painting business. In the early days Mr. Munhall was prominent in the temperance affairs and was an active church member in his early days. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Catherine McKee, Mt. Vernon, Washington; Mrs. Addie Evans, Wolcott Indiana; Howard Munhall, Burlington, Washington; Mrs. Josephine Barr, Braidwood, IL; Mrs. Florence Bradrick, Leon, Kansas; and Mrs. Bertha Creiger and Henry G. Munhall of Urbana.

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY CERTIFICATE OF DEATH 1691 (1905)

Pioneer Resident.......

James Munhall, a pioneer resident whose career had been idenitified with the growth of this city, died Monday evening at 5:45 pm, at the family home, 704 East Main Street, after a serious illness of two weeks.Mr. Munhall had been confined to his bed since last Febraury but not until two weeks ago were apprehensions entertained for his recovery. The real cause of his illness and death was a fall he had sustained thirteen years ago as a result of which he received injuries to his head from which he never fully recovered.

Mr. Munhall was one of the city's oldest and most respected citizens. Born in Cumberland County, PA in 1825 his parents took him to Ohio , where they resided near Coshocton for many years while their son was growing into manhood. When the young man had just obtained his majority he heeded the call of Illinois which was then attracting the flower of Ohio youth, and came to this state, settling in the village of Urbana.

The place had no undertaker there and it remained for the young Ohioan to supply this lack. He was a skilled cabinet maker and with his hands he constructed the first hearse ever used in Urbana. Likewise, he built his own coffins, such being the custom in those days. For many years he remained at this business but afterward participated in many occupations.

On November 18, 1851 he was married to Nancy Mildred Webber, daughter of William T. Webber of Urbana. The ceremony being performed here. The couple made their home in a building which was on the site of the Methodist parsonage. When the congregation desired to build a home for the pastor, the little cabinet shop and house of Mr. Munhall was purchased and remodeled, doing service for a long time.

While Mr. Munhall was a sturdy Republican in politics he was never an active participant in political affairs and he never sought office, but once when he was elected as a nominee for justice of the peace by his party and elected by a rousing majority.

As justice of the peace he administered the law in a just and equitable manner. One of his favorite stories that he related to his children was how he married General John Charles Black to his wife. This ceremony was performed at the office of the justice in this city and COl. Busey came to secure him to perform the ceremony.

Mr. Munhall was deeply interested all his life in temperance work and was always to be relied on assistance. He had belonged to many temperance organizations during his lifetime and did all he could to promote the cause. He was a member of the Methodist church in his youth, but never united with any church in Urbana. In his dealings with his fellow men Mr. Munhall was noted as being strictly honest and just and he bore a reputation shared by but a few.

Mrs. Munhall died in April, 1904. The following children survive their father: Mrs. Catherine McKeee, Mt. Vernon, Washington; Mrs. Addie Evans, Wolcott, Indiana; Howard L. Munhall, Burllington, WA; Mrs. Josephine Barr, Braidwood, Illinois; Henry G. Munhall, Urbana, IL, Florence M. Bradrick, Leon, KS, and Mrs. Bertha Creiger, Urbana.

Funeral services will be held Wed afternoon at the home. If possible, Rev. G. D. Lawrence of Danville, a former Urbana Christian pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The Webber boys, nephews and grandnephews will act as pallbearers."
