Maxine P. Cullipher
Maxine Phelps Cullipher, 92, of 100 Terry Avenue, died Monday, July 13, 2015 in Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Cullipher was born in Washington County on April 26, 1923, and was the daughter of the late Zephie and Martha White Phelps. A homemaker, for many years she was also employed with Ricks Laundry. She was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 71 years, Ernest Cullipher; three sisters, Martha Jane Gibbs, Edna Ambrose, and Jeanette Avery; and by brothers, Edison and Zephie Phelps. Surviving are her daughter, Joyce Ann Tarkenton of Edenton; her son, Ernest Danny Cullipher and wife Barbara of Leaner, TX; her sister, Agnes Barber of Jamesville; her brother, Robert Phelps and wife Loretta of Creswell; four grandchildren, Erich Cullipher and wife Vivian, Ian Cullipher, April Smithwick, and Adrienne Lee and husband Ted; and by three great-granddaughters, Bobbi Smithwick, Evelynne Cullipher, and Gwendolynne Lee. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, by the Revs. Bob Young and Donald Sawyer. A private burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home immediately following the service on Thursday, and all other times at the home of her daughter, 1512 W. Queen Street, Edenton.
