He was preceded in death by his parents, Zephaniah Henderson Phelps and Mary Martha White Phelps; brothers, Edison and Zephie Phelps, Jr.; sisters, Edna Ambrose, Martha Jane Gibbs, Maxine Cullipher and Jeanette Avery.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Loretta Haire Phelps; children, Robert W. Phelps (Helen) of Winston-Salem, NC, Donna Phelps Hoffman (Joseph) of Tobaccoville, NC, and Sandra Phelps of New Bern, NC; grandchildren, Chris Davenport (Amber), Megan Rathbun (Tyler), Jacob Hoffman (Kayla), Charles Phelps (Gina); great grandchildren, Levi Davenport, Hawkins Rathbun, Rydar Hoffman and River Hoffman; sister, Agnes Barber, and several nieces and nephews.
Bobby graduated from Creswell High School in 1950. He was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953. He attended Diesel School in Nashville, Tennessee. He worked as a mechanic with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and retired in 1994. After retirement, he and Loretta enjoyed many bus trips to various locations.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 0391 and a past member of the Creswell Ruritan Club. He was a member of Philippi Church of Christ and a previous member of Mt. Tabor Free Will Baptist Church while his children were growing up. He was a Sunday School Superintendent, sang in a trio and in the church choir.
The family would like to thank the Community Home Care and Hospice staff - Kaela, Deborah, Stacey, Essie and Daryl for their excellent care over the last few months. They would also like to thank his niece, Frances Pardue, for helping with his care.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Mount Tabor Free Will Baptist Church in Creswell, North Carolina with Reverend David Young officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Free Will Baptist Children's Home - 8907 Buck Deans Road, Middlesex, NC 27557, or a charity of your choice.
The family asks that masks be worn at the service.
