Aaron enlisted as a Private in Company "K", 4th Virginia Cavalry on 27 April 1862. He was captured near Gettysburg in July 1863, and held at Fort Delaware until exchanged on 18 September 1864.

After spending many weeks recovering in various Richmond hospitals, he transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on 3 February 1865.

Aaron never married. He died of "Chronic Bronchitis", per Cemetery records. His grave in his brother Robert M. Burton's plot was marked in March 2018 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery".
