The son of Daniel & Maria Elizabeth (Salada) Faust, in 1860 he was a laborer living with and/or working for the Loudenschlager farming family in Gratz, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Four years later he reported his occupation as shoemaker and stood 5' 7" tall with brown hair and blue eyes. On October 26, 1862, in Gratz, he married Hannah Machamer and fathered Mary Ellen D. (b. 05/10/64).
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 18, 1864, as a private with Co. A, 50th Pennsylvania Infantry, but was killed in action at the battle of the Wilderness.
