The son of Col. Stephen Mack, the founder of Pontiac, and his wife Temperance Bond. Almon Mack was a twin; his sister was Almira Mack (one of the first converts to the Mormon church in 1830). Almon Mack's cousin was the prophet and founder of the Mormon church (LDS) Joseph Smith.

Almon Mack also served as Rochester Justice of the Peace (1860) and as Township Supervisor.
