Funeral of Policeman Freeman
The funeral services of George Freeman, late policeman of the Town of Versailles, took place at the Christian Church on last Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The services were conducted by Elder J.B. McGinn, pastor or the church, assisted by Rev. E.H. Pearce, of the Methodist Church.
The house was crowded. The remains of the dead policeman, encased in a handsome metallic coffin, rested upon a table in front of the altar.
Elder McGinn read from the 1st to the 14th verses of the 14th chapter of Job, after which he delivered a brief by appropriate discourse. Rev. Mr. Pearce followed, paying a high tribute to the deceased as a public officer, with a disquisition upon the subject of law and order. After the services at the church, the remains were followed to the grave by his family, friends, and many citizens. The Board of Town Trustees acted as pallbearers.
Note: G. Freeman is the only policeman in Versailles to have died in the line of duty. He was killed when arresting two drunk and disorderly people, Ollie and Preston Brown.
