Myra Thompson, age 59, one of nine African-American parishioners killed in a mass shooting during Bible study at Mother Emanuel on June 17, 2015

Became an ordained AME minister in 2014 and received her license to preach June 17, the day of the shooting.

Emanuel Emanuel AME Church, hundreds wrapped the block around the church and packed the inside. She was remembered as a tireless woman whose devotion to Mother Emanuel, the church in which she grew up, was second only to her commitment to her family. Mourners spilled out the front doors and down the stairs of Mother Emanuel, a group had assembled along the iron barricade on Calhoun Street singing "Amazing Grace."U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, Gov. Nikki Haley and Charleston Mayor Joe Riley were seated in the front of the church.

She was 59 years old. She was an active member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was the wife of the Rev. Anthony Thompson, who is Vicar of Holy Trinity REC Church in Charleston. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English from Benedict University, Class of 1979. She was a retired high school counselor. She had received her license to the ministry on Wednesday, the day she was killed. She was the head of the property committee at Mother Emanuel AME Church, helping to restore and revitalize the church's historic buildings.

Myra leaves to mourn a loving, devoted and cherished husband, The Rev. Anthony Thompson; one son and one daughter whom she cherished: Kevin Singleton and Denise Quarles; stepson: Anthony Thompson, Jr; twelve brothers: Mackey Singleton, who preceded her in death; Leroy Singleton (Judy), Romey Singleton, Leon Scott, Michael Moore (Joyce), Barry Moore, Rodney Moore (Renee), John Moore (Maria), Reginald Moore (Candace), James Moore, Jamar Moore and JA Ariel Moore; three beloved sisters: Jackie Cooper (Melvin), Ruby Henry and Maja Moore; two grandchildren: Kennedy Singleton and Kaleb Singleton; nine siblings from her extended Coakley family: Isaiah Jr., Lillian, Eunice Guyton (Jim), Marjorie McIver (Winston), Marlene Jenkins (David), Sharon Coakley, Claudette Watkins, Catherine Harrington and Blondelle Gadsden and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at The Palmetto Mortuary, 1122 Morrison Drive, Charleston, SC 29403 from 10 AM to 4 PM. Also at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church, 110 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29403 from 5 PM to 8 PM. The family will be receiving friends beginning at 6 PM.

Her funeral will be held on Monday, June 29, 2015 beginning at 11 AM at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church.

NOTE: She was killed during the mass shooting at Bible Study session at Mother Emanuel AME Church, 110 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC. It happened during a prayer meeting being held at the church on Wednesday night, June 17, 2015 approximately 9 PM.
