Arthur was born July 1, 1886 in Northville, Michigan to Edgar & Frances "Reeves" Lyke. He had one sister; Grace "Lyke" Cornelius, of Detroit, MI, three brothers; Fred & Ernest of Northville, MI, and Albert, of Canton, OH.
Arthur left home as teenager and headed west on a train. He ended up in Topeka, KS. Arthur first worked delivering bakery items on a bicycle. He later worked in the oilfields for Tinkham Veale I, a lawyer, oil producer and business man of Topeka. Tinkham was a very important man in Arthur's life. Tinkham took an interest in Arthur because of his work ethic. Tinkham took him out of the oilfield and put him on the road purchasing oil & gas interest in several states. The oil boom was spreading and Tinkham wanted to capitalize on it. Tinkham and Arthur shared the oil & gas interest that Arthur was able to acquire.
Arthur purchased land in Greenwood County, near Hamilton, KS, where there was oil activity. There, he developed his own oil business. He continued to acquire more land and leases over the years.
Arthur was first married to Mildred Phillips, of Topeka, KS. Mildred died in Topeka, KS on August 27, 1950, from cancer. She was the daughter of Joseph H. & Martha Phillips. To this union no children were born. On July 16, 1953, Arthur married Lydia Lena Geiser of Topeka, KS. Lydia was the daughter of Jacob & Marianna "Miller" Geiser of Topeka. They were married in Goshen, Indiana. Arthur and Lydia made their home in Topeka. Later, they moved to Eureka, in Greenwood County, so Arthur could be closer to his passion, the oil fields.
Arthur and Lydia loved to travel and made several trips abroad. They loved to visit Lydia's family, that live in Switzerland, and tour Europe. Arthur insisted on taking his own car, on the ship with them, so they could travel the countries freely.
Campbell Funeral Home, of Eureka, was in charge of services. Services were held Tuesday morning, October 6, 1983, at the funeral home. Graveside services were at 2 P.M., in Topeka, that afternoon.
